Breast Cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in women today. According to the American Cancer Society, one out of eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that breast cancer can be successfully treated with early detection, and survival rates have increased over time.

Mammography is one of the most common screening tests for breast cancer detection, but traditional 2D mammography has certain limitations. The images captured by conventional mammography can sometimes be unclear, resulting in additional testing, which can be stressful. It can also be challenging to detect abnormalities in dense breast tissue.

What are 3D Mammograms?

Breast Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is the latest screening technology revolutionizing breast cancer detection. 3D tomosynthesis is an advanced imaging technique that provides a detailed 3-dimensional image of the breast tissue. It is like a flip book of the breast, allowing a radiologist to see through several layers of dense breast tissue, making detecting small masses or abnormalities easier. According to studies, 3D mammography provides more accurate results, lowering the chance of being called back for diagnostic testing.

“We are so excited to have 3D mammography at all of our breast center locations. 3D mammography adds detail to the images that can help the radiologists detect subtle changes. It is the latest and greatest in early detection of breast cancer, and I highly recommend it for our patients!”

So, how does 3D mammography work? The process is similar to a traditional mammogram. The breast is gently compressed, and a machine takes multiple images of the breast from different angles. The equipment used for 3D mammography is similar to that of a traditional mammogram, and the exam time is only a few seconds longer.

How Do I Get a 3D Mammogram?

Another significant advantage of 3D mammography is that it is convenient and non-invasive. Women can schedule their screenings without a doctor’s order. The American Cancer Society recommends that women get yearly mammograms at age 40. However, women with certain risk factors may begin screening mammograms earlier. Early detection is critical when it comes to breast cancer. By following the recommended screening guidelines, women can increase their chances of catching breast cancer in its early stages.
