Recognizing and Managing Juvenile Diabetes

As parents, we want to keep our children happy and healthy. Unfortunately, for some families, that journey includes navigating the challenges of juvenile or type 1 diabetes. This chronic autoimmune condition typically develops in childhood or adolescence and requires careful management to ensure the child’s health and well-being.

At Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, our expert pediatric endocrinology team has extensive experience caring for young patients with type 1 diabetes. We’re here to provide the compassionate, specialized support families need to thrive.

Recognizing the Signs of Juvenile Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes most commonly appears in children between the ages of 4 and 7 or during puberty between the ages of 10 and 14. However, it can develop at any age. As a parent, it’s important to be aware of the critical signs and symptoms to watch for:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination: One of the earliest and most noticeable signs is a child’s excessive thirst and need to urinate, often throughout the night.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Despite average or increased appetite, children with type 1 diabetes may lose weight rapidly.
  • Fatigue and irritability: The body’s inability to regulate blood sugar levels properly can lead to lethargy, mood swings, and other behavioral changes.
  • Blurred vision: High blood sugar can cause the eye’s lens to swell, resulting in blurred or impaired eyesight.
  • Sweet, fruity breath odor: This is often described as smelling similar to nail polish remover and is a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis, a severe complication.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing juvenile diabetes and preventing potentially life-threatening complications.
