The big reveal: Unveiling the new Children’s Hospital at Erlanger

Providing the very best in children’s health care requires talented physicians, advanced technology, and a facility that matches the level of sophisticated services offered. That’s why Children’s Hospital at Erlanger has revealed major plans to build a new downtown facility and revitalize the 3rdstreet corridor.

To make the vision of a new children’s hospital a reality, the Erlanger Foundations launched an ambitious fundraising effort, with a goal of $35 million over the next two years. With early commitments from Erlanger Health System and generous donors, the drive is over halfway to the goal. The money will fund phase one of the new children’s hospital, a new glass structure housing all pediatric ambulatory services. The inpatient tower will ultimately rise beside it. And a new women’s hospital and NICU are planned as part of the long-term vision, as well.

With advancements in modern medicine, many conditions that once required overnight stays can now be treated with outpatient procedures. But, generally, those children requiring inpatient services today are sicker than 40 years ago when Children’s Hospital at Erlanger was built. More severe illnesses mean a higher potential for extensive recovery periods, which is why the newly designed space will have only private, suite—like rooms — making lengthy hospital stays more comfortable for patients and families.

And to incorporate their ideas, an advisory group of children was consulted to help architects concept the new space. Patients and families can expect interactive waiting rooms, color-changing lights in patient rooms, and animal sculptures sprinkled throughout the lobby. The new hospital is sure to be a health care destination for generations of families from across the region.
