Dr. Bill Moore Smith Tapped for Leadership Role at Erlanger

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Dr. Bill Moore-Smith, longtime family and sport medicine physician, has taken an expanded leadership role with the Erlanger Health System.

Dr. Smith, with UT Erlanger Primary and Athletic Health, has been tapped to lead, develop and grow adult primary care services with the Erlanger Health System by President and CEO, Kevin M. Spiegel, FACHE.

In addition to seeing patients at his Pineville Road and Lookout Mountain locations and continuing to serve on the teaching faculty of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTCOMC), Dr. Smith will be heavily involved in recruiting new and graduate physicians into Erlanger’s existing and start-up primary care offices, Mr. Spiegel announced.

“Given Dr. Smith’s background as a former hospital administrator and highly respected family and sports medicine specialist, he is in a unique position to help Erlanger continue to provide outstanding primary care, as well as enhance our hospital services and group of specialty physicians,” Mr. Spiegel said. “I am extremely pleased that Dr. Smith has agreed to use his extensive management skills to help with Erlanger’s plans for expansion and growth,” he added.

Dr. Smith said he is “looking forward to developing a collegial, cohesive primary group model positioned to respond to the many challenges our healthcare system faces.

“By using the many strengths of the Erlanger Health System, our outstanding team of specialty physicians, and our inpatient and ambulatory care programs, we will build the primary care group of choice for our region’s residents, physicians, and providers,” he stated.

Dr. Smith received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis and served his family practice residency at the University of Virginia Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. He received his sports medicine education at the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and University of Tennessee Athletic Departments.

He received a Master’s degree in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Smith has served as team physician for many local high schools and colleges, including UTC and Covenant College, and for the 1996 Olympics and NCAA Championship events.

He currently serves as the Director of Sports Medicine for UT Erlanger and UTC.

In addition, Dr. Smith has served as associate professor for the Family Practice and Pediatric Departments of Medicine for UTCOMC.

Dr. Smith has practiced medicine in Chattanooga for more than 23 years.
